This was the final gig that Dan Baird will likely do in the UK as he announced in advance that he was giving up travelling over after close on 40 years.
Dan was former frontman of Georgia Satellites who I’d first seen at the International in Manchester in 1989 then at Newcastle Mayfair in 1990 before Dan went solo in the early 90’s and I’d basically seen him every tour since then.
Former Satellites drummer Mauro Mallegan played along side Dan all those years and was one of the hardest hitting drummers I’d seen. Also a long time collaborator was former Jason & The Scorchers guitarist Warner E Hodges.
The gig was at Bannermans Bar in Cowgate in Edinburgh which is a great venue in what is essentially an old underground cavern. Once you’re in there for the band it’s difficult to get back out when the place is full.
Dan Baird played all the usual classics and ended the gig soaked in sweat as always before he did the fan meet and greet and I got him and Mauro to autograph the 89 shirt as a memento.
The Satellites still continue although with only Rick Richards from the classic line-up.
